silicon carbide ceramic foam filter

  • von

sic ceramic foam filter is effective molten metal filters that protect molten aluminum liquid from erosion and corrosion while eliminating inclusions and creating layer flow, leading to cleaner metals, higher quality castings and less waste, all leading to improved bottom lines.

This new formulation contains considerably more fumed silica than previous slurries, creating stronger products with high temperature strength that can withstand large flows of molten metal. Fired blanks made using this slurry possess great temperature strength as well as large flows.

Filtration Properties

silicon carbide ceramic foam filter feature excellent filtration properties and can remove inclusions and trapped gases from molten metal, creating a smooth laminar flow during casting process and leading to cleaner metal with fewer inclusion defects and higher-quality castings. Furthermore, these materials are durable enough to withstand high-temperature environments while resisting corrosion.

silicon carbide ceramic foam filter can be utilized during the purification process for malleable iron, ductile iron and gray iron in order to eliminate impurities that might affect quality in finished products. Furthermore, these filters can enhance overall metallurgical processes while simultaneously increasing product yields while decreasing waste through improved waste yield management and lower scrap metal generation during forming processes.

sic ceramic foam filter is also easy to install and boast strong mechanical strength, making them an excellent choice for industrial furnaces that require high temperatures and pressures. In addition, these filters have low thermal shock loss as well as being resistant to chemical vapors.

silicon carbide ceramic foam filter feature high porosity to allow easy flow of molten metal during casting processes and prevent clogs during heat transfer. They also have good acid and alkali resistance so as to withstand the high temperature and chemical conditions found during manufacturing processes.

High Temperature Stability

The present invention comprises a silicon carbide filter intended for use in molten metal filtration. Its filter body is constructed using a ceramic slurry composition containing silicon carbide and fumed silica in equal parts. Slurry contains colloidal silica and reticulated organic polymers; ceramic slurry impregnated with this foam is then fired at an elevated temperature to produce silicon carbide filter. The invention provides a slurry composition which exhibits substantially greater room temperature and high temperature strength compared to prior art silicon carbide filters, enabling thinner minimum thickness filters. Strength of Slurry Composition Increased Primeability of Filters It has been found that strong slurry composition improves primeability of filters. It is thought that high vapor pressure of fumed silica bonding agents contributes to enhanced room temperature and high temperature strength.

This slurry formulation is particularly effective at filtering molten metal because it can be applied in thin layers without deforming its foam. As a result, the ceramic layer created from this application remains very stable when exposed to large flows of molten metal, resisting turbulence and thermal shocks while simultaneously decreasing gas content within molten metal as well as improving organization within its matrix.

Low Pressure Loss

sic ceramic foam filter boast low pressure loss. When applied in casting applications, they are capable of removing nonmetallic inclusions and purifying metal solution while decreasing rejection rate of cast iron castings. Furthermore, these filters do not corrode easily when exposed to acids and do not pollute molten metal – making it particularly suitable for casting copper alloys and cast steel castings.

Combining silicon carbide components with additional ceramic materials such as alumina is possible, and ideal when grain sizes of less than 45 microns exist (preferably -325 mesh, though larger grain sizes can also be employed). Other ceramics like zirconia, chromia and cordierite can also be utilized.

Fumed silica may provide better thixotropic properties and primability than either alumina or fused silica in bonding to silicon carbide components in the slurry, as evidenced by increased primability.

The ceramic slurry produced is then dried and fired at an elevated temperature to create ceramic foam, producing fireproof blanks which exhibit increased strength compared to those previously produced from existing slurry types. Additionally, this increased strength allows thinner minimum thickness requirements while creating significant cost savings from less materials required for coating the foam surface.

Biocompatibility

silicon carbide filter is an innovative porous ceramic material with outstanding physical, chemical and temperature properties. Lightweight yet extremely strong, its properties allow it to be formed into various shapes to meet specific application needs and is used widely across metallurgy, the chemical industry, aerospace and environmental protection applications.

silicon carbide filter feature low bulk density and three-dimensional mesh structures with minimal bulk density, as well as high open porosity and low specific surface area filtration capabilities, making it an effective molten metal filtration material. Furthermore, their design ensures they don’t pick up dust during transportation and pouring processes and remain free from loose debris during pouring processes.

An air lock system can prevent impurities from migrating with the molten metal, thus increasing casting quality and improving production rate. Furthermore, it reduces air flow in the mold to minimize impact from molten metal on it and increase production rate while simultaneously decreasing pin hole and sand hole defeats and improving casting efficiency.

sic ceramic foam filter boast superior high-temperature stability in iron and copper melt, without polluting alloys or oxidizing molten metal, so that they can be reused multiple times without losing their filtration capability. Furthermore, their small space requirements and easy handling make this a great filtration material choice for iron castings.
